“some bugs” EP

when silk is made from silkworms, the animals are killed. but way back before we have record of, the domesticated silk moths have a common ancestor with the wild silk moths. the first three tracks of this EP go together and tell a story of a wild silk moth. you can read along below, as you listen.

the last track is made with the Decent Sampler VST instrument “Record Cutter Synth”. info on that is here.

larval days:

After a little while, the hatchling bit through its egg. The larvae were tiny and eager to eat Mulberry leaves. At first they ate inbetween the veins of the leaf. Four days later the larva molted for the first time. It began eating right through the veins of leaves as it grew bigger. It molted four more times. After the fifth time, it stopped eating and started weaving a strand of silk in a figure-eight pattern around its body. Soon it was entirely wrapped inside a silken cocoon and ready to turn into a pupa. Nothing was telling it to remain juvenile anymore, and so enzymes were released which liquiefied its tissues. Protected from the outside world, it entered a slumber. Hidden deep inside were the imaginal disks that would turn into the parts of an adult wild silk moth.

unfolding the wings:

Inside the cocoon, inside the pupa, the liquefied proteins and the remaining cells slowly rearranged themselves to form the structures of a moth. Certain cells grew into legs, some into antennae, some into reproductive organs, some into eyes. The cells that made up a wing duplicated in number many times over. After fourteen days, the fully formed moth melted a hole in the cocoon and crawled out as a new creature. It found an experience of its surroundings, and a place to unfold and unwrinkle its wings. No one had boiled the cocoon or eaten the larva. No one had destroyed the pupa. The wild silk moth flew off to find a mate.

death of wild silk moth:

After mating, laying eggs and navigating around at night for fourteen days, the moth had used up all its fats and died an elegant and uncomplicated death. After death, the moth's carcass would be eaten by ants, bacteria and other microorganisms.
